In the City of Martinsville, Jennifer Bowles was re-elected to City Council with 3,295 votes. Former Mayor Danny Turner beat out Joey Martin for the second seat by 32 votes, 1,681 to 1,649.

Democrats have won a House majority. Democrats picked up at least two dozen House seats Tuesday, capturing the 218 seats needed to break Republicans’ eight-year hold on the House that began with the tea party revolt of 2010.

Denver Riggleman has been elected to represent the 5th District of Virginia in Congress. Riggleman, a Republican, beat back a challenge from Leslie Cockburn. With 94% of precincts reporting, Riggleman had 151,852 votes — or 54% — while Cockburn had 129,857 votes or 46%.

In the 9th District, with 96 percent reporting, Morgan Griffith had 65 percent to Anthony Flaccavento’s 35 percent.

Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine has been re-elected to the U.S. Senate. The first-term senator who was Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016 defeated Republican Corey Stewart.

Virginia voters made their picks Tuesday in several competitive congressional races, flipping Virginia’s congressional delegation from a Republican to a Democratic majority. Voters also cast ballots in a special state House election that kept Republicans in control in the Virginia House of Delegates. Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated two-term Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Dave Brat in Virginia’s 7th District Congressional race.
