While Jennifer Bowles broke the record for number of votes received in a City race, Morgan Griffith of the 9th District broke the record in his District’s race beating his opponent, Anthony Flaccavento, by 21 percent. Flaccavento, of Abingdon, said he was “reeling” in the wake of his defeat. He won only in Martinsville, Radford, and Montgomery County, areas he called “liberal strongholds.” Flaccavento received about 30,000 fewer votes than in 2012. In his statement, Flaccavento termed Griffith an “uninspiring incumbent with a demonstrably poor track record in the district, who ran a terribly lackluster campaign” but “nevertheless beat the pants off of me.”
