“The Last Waltz”
“The Last Waltz” was filmed on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, and released in 1978. Now that Thanksgiving 2018 is almost here, I’ve finally watched what some consider the greatest documentary concert films ever made.
In case you don’t know, this is a Martin Scorsese creation of the last public performance of “The Band.” The show started at about 5 o’clock that afternoon and ended at 2:30 in the morning. The quintet, after 16 years on the road, never played together again.
Part of what makes this film so amazing is the cast of guests who come to perform with and show respect for this group of musicians. They include Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, and others. I am amazed at the sheer musical talent of this event. Whether you’re a rocker or not, anyone with any knowledge of music will recognize the extreme quality of musicianship and the wide range of genre. It’s just unbelievable. Of the five members of the band, only Garth Hudson (81) and Robbie Robertson (75) are still alive. This movie is a real slice of musical history. Five Stars.
