Jackie Lee Smith Sr., 71, of Bassett, Va., departed on Monday, January 7, 2019 following a brief hospital stay and a heart attack while hospitalized that allowed members of his extended family a wonderful opportunity to see him one last time.

Jackie was born in Martinsville, Va. on October 24, 1947 to Helen and Charles Furr, and later adopted by Oswald Wade and Sue Wells Smith. He was preceded in death by an infant sibling, a sister, Yome S. O’Dell; a step-sister, Nell Wingfield; and an older brother, Allen Furr.

He is survived by one son, Lee; five brothers, Dusty, Dean, Stanley, Terry, and Junior; five sisters, Charlene, Karla, Jeannie, Donna, and Lynn; two grandchildren, India and David; and many nieces and nephews.

Jackie loved outdoor sports, spending as much time as possible on the golf course and trying to catch another Virginia Trophy smallmouth bass. Jackie was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, serving in multiple offices; including Past Worthy President, Past President, Secretary, and while he was President of Collinsville Aerie 3739, they celebrated the grand opening of their current Reed Creek home in October of 1985. His health declined with aging and he spent his last years tinkering with mechanical things like lawn mowers and trucks, and caring for his companion animal – Pearl, who made frequent cameos in his online photos.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30pm on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Bassett Funeral Home.

A graveside funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. G.H. Vaughn officiating.

Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett is serving the Smith family.
