Sheriff Lane Perry sent out a request for the media to attend a called Press Conference Tuesday this week at 3 PM. It ended up being an announcement for his run for re-election.

The Martinsville Bulletin quoted Dan Ortiz, a University of Virginia law professor, as calling the event “poor practice.” Ortiz went on to say “The public has a great interest in how the police department operates,” and if law enforcement continues to trick the media into showing up for something they thought was newsworthy, but ends up being political, ”how many times is this going to happen before you stop showing up?”

Perry was flanked by Franklin County Sheriff Bill Overton, Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith, Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor, Danville Sheriff Michael Mondul, Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper, and PHCC Police Chief Gary Dove.
