At approximately 9:30 pm on June 29, 2019 the Martinsville-Henry County Emergency 911 Center received a call of an ATV accident at the Outdoorsman Park ATV Trails and Catfish Pond located at 480 Lewis Rd., Martinsville, Virginia.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and found that Angela Michelle Burks, 38, of 200 Maxie Dr., Spencer, VA was riding in the passenger seat of 2015 Can-Am side-by-side UTV when the accident took place. The UTV was being operated by Paul Eddie Burks, 39, of 200 Maxie Dr., Spencer, VA. At the time of the accident, the UTV was being operated on a steep incline when it overturned ejecting the passenger. The occupants were not wearing helmets or seatbelts at the time of the accident.
The Henry County Department of Public Safety and Ridgeway Rescue Squad attempted life saving measures. Angela Burks was transported by rescue squad to SOVAH Health Martinsville where she was pronounced dead. Paul Burks was transported to SOVAH Health Martinsville where he was treated for non-life threatening injures.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia performed an external examination today and found trauma to the chest, abdomen and head. The manner of death has been ruled an accident.
This incident remains under investigation by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the Henry County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Once the investigation is completed, a determination as to what, if any, charges will be applicable.
Volunteer members from the Ridgeway Rescue Squad and Dyers Store Fire Department responded to the scene and assisted with this incident. Volunteer staff from the Outdoorsman Park ATV Trails assisted first responders with traveling into the remote accident scene.
