Happy July 4th everyone and thanks for spending part of the day with us here at WHEE Radio. I’d like to take a moment to offer a few reminders to those who may have forgotten, and to pass along some information to those of you who do not know…
Yesterday I got a message from a lady on Facebook…
“Bill. Miss you on whee going back on soon? Hope so”
I’m not sure what the cause of the confusion is here, but I’ve been on WHEE, and am currently on WHEE. You can find us on AM1370, the same place we have been since 1954. We are also available online at whee.net and on the TuneIn app. I’m on the air Monday through Saturday with the “Coffee Break” from 8 AM to 9 AM and the “Classifieds from 9 AM to 9:30 AM. I also provide local newscasts Monday through Saturday at 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM and Monday through Friday at 12:30 PM, 4:30 PM, and 5:30 PM.
A couple of days ago I received a call from a gentleman wanting us to promote his Church’s upcoming summer bible school. We have a community calendar where we are glad to promote non-profit and religious events at no charge, as long as there is no advertising budget. In this case, I accepted the information for the event and added it to the calendar, only to see a very nice, and expensive display ad of the same event in the Martinsville Bulletin the following day.
Please understand neither the local newspaper or local radio are funded by grants or governmental handouts in order to serve you. For this privilege, we must sell advertising to pay for our costs. Local print and radio are suffering greatly due to the onslaught of the use of social media.
The newspaper does have one advantage over us, they have a dual source of income – they charge advertisers to advertise, and then they charge their customers to read it. You have never paid to listen to your radio. Our only source of income is through advertising. If we didn’t take a stand on this, we would disappear completely in short order.
I would encourage everyone to read your local newspaper, listen to your local radio, be informed, participate, and support us. We need you, and you need us.
