Despite all of the talk of legalizing marijuana for recreational use, the state of Virginia is arresting more people than ever for marijuana offenses. According to a Virginia State Police Report, a record 29,000 arrests were made related to marijuana in 2018, three times the number of arrests two decades ago.

Statistics show 60% of all drug arrests are marijuana busts and involve people 24 years-old or younger and most of them are for simple possession. No explanation for the increase has been offered.

Attorney General Mark Herring has become state’s highest official to call for legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
