In 2015, Vicki Gardner of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce was being interviewed by Alison Parker on live television with Adam Ward operating the camera when Vester Lee Flanagan II, a former employee of WDBJ appeared and shot all three killing Parker and Ward. Gardner survived. According to the Roanoke Times, she has filed a $6 million dollar civil suit against the station claiming negligence. Flanagan had been fired 2 years prior to the incident for threatening behavior. Flanagan’s suit claims WDBJ didn’t properly screen Flannagan because he had similar issues with previous employers. Flannagan took his own life after the incident.
According to VDOT, bridge repairs on U.S. 220 over Reed Creek in Henry County continue to require lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. Completion date is December and a portion of Old Mill Road in Patrick County continues to be closed for a bridge replacement over Spoon Creek. There are detours and directional signs. Weather permitting, the work is expected to be completed May 1 of next year.
Danville police have filed charges after an elderly man was beaten and robbed inside the local WalMart. The incident happened on the Mount Cross Road on Thursday. According to Danville Police, the 79-year-old victim was inside the store when he was assaulted by 43-year-old Jessie Jones of Danville. Police say Jones took the victim’s wallet before fleeing. The victim was transported from the scene and treated for minor injuries. Police have charged Jones with robbery and with violating the terms of his probation.
