According to the National Weather Service, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening and again on Friday. The primary threat will be damaging wind. Locally heavy rain is possible this afternoon and evening with this storms and likely Friday and Friday night. This may result in flooding.

Danville Police have arrested 41-year-old Jerome Jermaine Davis on a charge of kidnapping. Davis was taken into custody on Tuesday, without incident. Davis was wanted for abduction in an incident that that occurred last month. Davis is being held in the Danville City Jail.

Gas prices are expected to make a significant drop this fall, according to AAA due to cheaper crude oil prices, the drop-off in gasoline demand after Labor Day and the change over to winter-blend gasoline. AAA forecasts the national average to drop to $2.40 or lower this fall. In the South and Southeast regions, AAA says prices at the pump could drop below $2 per gallon this fall, however any major hurricanes could change that. According to gasbuddy.com, the least expensive gas in Martinsville this morning is at the Valero at 5972 A.L. Philpott Highway at $2.06 a gallon.

A home in the Long Island community of Pittsylvania County was destroyed in an early morning fire. Gretna Fire and EMS units were dispatched to the home in the 13-hundred block of Moons Road about one a.m. The fire marshal says the house was a total loss and burned to the ground. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Banking machine maker Diebold Nixdorf plans to close its Greensboro assembly plant by the beginning of 2020, costing roughly 122 local workers their jobs. The company is moving its assembly work closer to its national headquarters in Ohio, company spokesman Mike Jacobsen said Wednesday. Employees at the plant on Pleasant Ridge Road, just west of Piedmont Triad International Airport, were told of the impending closure Wednesday morning, Jacobsen said. Diebold Nixdorf ranks among the top tier of companies worldwide that make and service automated teller machines.

Press Glass in Henry County will have a “Meet ‘n’ Greet” event with sessions at 10 AM and 6 PM on September 10th. The first hour of each session will be a presentation with information about the factory and employment opportunities. The second hour will be an opportunity to talk with members of Press Glass. Press Glass is the largest independent flat-glass processing operation in Europe. They are investing $43.55 million in a plant at the new Commonwealth Crossing Business Centre with a promise of 212 new jobs paying more than $15 per hour. The presentations will be at the Commonwealth Centre for Advanced Training, 870 Commonwealth Crossing, Ridgeway.
