Ten schools in Henry and Patrick counties and Martinsville were awarded School Security Equipment grants. Grants were awarded to 340 schools in 70 school divisions to pay for video monitoring systems, voice and video internal communications systems, mass notification systems, Visitor-identification systems, access control systems, two-way radios, security vestibules and other security upgrades.
A Madison man is behind bars after Rockingham County authorities say he choked and stabbed a woman. The incident happened last Thursday. Darrin Eugene Whitaker was arrested by Greensboro Police and is being held in the Guilford County Jail awaiting his transfer to the Rockingham County Detention facility.
WXII 12 reports that about 85 news jobs are coming to Eden, courtesy of a $17 million expansion by Gildan. The expansion follows Gildan Yarns’ purchase of a former yarn spinning plant to add to its existing operation in Eden. Gildan Activewear, the parent company of Gildan Yarns, is Eden’s largest private employer and Rockingham County’s second largest industrial employer. The new jobs will have an average salary of just over $37,000.
A tropical system brewing in the Gulf of Mexico could bring additional drought relief to Virginia on Sunday. The low-pressure area, which is expected to take the name Nestor if it organizes into a tropical storm, was centered about 475 miles south of Houston on Thursday evening. Until it takes on a more organized look, the low was called “Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen” by the National Hurricane Center. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for portions of eastern Louisiana, Alabama and western Florida, where to-be Nestor will come ashore with 50 mph winds on Saturday morning.
