Authorities confirm that at least one person died in a house fire in the northern end of Pittsylvania County Wednesday night. Fire and rescue units were dispatched to the house fire on Blue Ridge Drive in the Gretna area sometime around 9:30 p.m.
Two more men have been sentenced after plea agreements in the killing in 2018 of a man in Axton. Dylan Alan Day, 20, of Reidsville, N.C., and Landon Chase Handy, 20, of Liberty, N.C., have been sentenced to amended charges in the death Eric Adams, who was shot eight times and found lying on his living room floor. Day was sentenced Oct. 17 in Henry County Circuit Court to 11 years and Handy was sentenced to 7 years.
VDOT is conducting a new study on ways to improve safety, increase traffic flow and support future growth along Route 220 in Roanoke, Franklin and Henry counties. The organization wants to show the public some preliminary design concepts in order to get their feedback on what they think is the best way to improve the 220 corridor. Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Henry County Administration Building located at 3300 Kings Mountain Road in Martinsville.
The cause and manner of death for Dr. Vincent K. Jones remain a mystery six weeks after he was found unconscious as federal investigators were about to arrest him. According to the Martinsville Bulletin, “The results of Jones are still pending,” said Tracie Cooper, district administrator for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke. “We are still waiting on additional testing results.” Cooper said there was no estimated time when the results of the tests would be available. Jones had been indicted on seven counts after an investigation by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration that began in August 2017.
Mill Stream Corp. is voluntarily recalling ten lots of cold smoked salmon because it has the potential to be contaminated, according to the Food And Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA announced Wednesday, Nov. 6 that smoked salmon sold across the U.S., including in Virginia has been recalled because it could be contaminated with a bacteria that can lead to botulism, a potentially deadly form of food poisoning. The FDA says recall was initiated because the product’s water phase salt (WPS) tested below 3.5 percent. If you purchased the salmon frozen, the FDA says keep it frozen until it is ready to be thawed in the refrigerator immediately before it is cooked. If it’s already thawed, throw it away.
At approximately 2:34 pm yesterday, a City of Danville School Bus came to a stop from Haynesworth Dr. at the intersection of Elizabeth St. A Westwood Middle School student exited the bus to cross Elizabeth St. At that time a 2009 Chevrolet Pickup owned by Thompson Trucking in Concord, VA was traveling south on Elizabeth St. The truck crossed over to the northbound side of Elizabeth St. to get around the bus and struck the 12-year-old student. Witnesses indicated that the warning lights were in operation at the time of the collision. The victim was conscious at the scene and transported to SOVAH Health-Danville for treatment of her injuries. As a result, David Maurice Durham, age 81, was charged with passing a stopped school bus.
The Electoral Boards have completed their canvassing of Tuesday’s returns, and one discrepancy was discovered in the city of Martinsville. Only 25% of registered voters in Martinsville voted. Henry County and Patrick County had a turnout of 39%.
