The regular season for High School Football ended last night with GW Danville winning the Piedmont District shutting out Martinsville 49-0. GW finishes with a 7-4 season, the Bulldogs finished winless at 0-10. Bassett took the Smith River Classic from Magna Vista last night 16-12 leaving the Bengals at 6-4 on the season and the Warriors at 7-3, and the possibility that the two teams will face each other again in the playoffs. Franklin County finished with a 6-4 record after beating William Byrd 14-10 and Halifax County closes out the season 5-6 with a 42-7 win over Tunstall. The Trojans finished 1-9 with their only win coming against Martinsville. The VHSL will announce final playoff pairings early next week.
Winter is coming to the East Coast for the next week. The next five to seven days generally are going to bring unseasonably low temperatures to the eastern two-thirds of the U.S., with the first chilly round hitting yesterday and a second, colder Arctic blast coming later. In Martinsville, lows overnight reached 20 degrees. Temperatures are expected to rebound a bit over the weekend, but colder air will be coming. An Arctic blast is bringing a week of below freezing temperatures to parts of the eastern US. For Martinsville today will be sunny and 49. Tonight clear and 31. Sunny and clear Sunday and Monday with highs in the 60’s and lows in the 30’s. Chance of rain Monday night and Tuesday and partly to mostly cloudy through Friday with a high of 47 on Tuesday and a low of 22 Tuesday and Wednesday night.
