Best actress Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón is vowing to stay silent.
The Spanish actress, who has come under fire for offensive comments she wrote on the social platform X, took to Instagram Thursday to announce that she is staying silent for the rest of the Emilia Pérez awards campaign.
In the post’s caption, Gascón referenced an interview Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard gave to Deadline, where he said he was no longer in contact with her and condemned her offensive posts, in which she made comments about Islam, George Floyd and the high amount of diversity at the Oscars.
“Following Jacques interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference,” Gascón wrote.
She ended her post by apologizing to those she has hurt.
“I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way,” Gascón wrote.
The 97th annual Academy Awards ceremony is Sunday, and with this group of nominations comes a bunch of interesting facts. Here’s a look at some fun facts about this season’s crop of nominees.
Wicked and Emilia Pérez are both nominated for best picture, marking the first time since 1968 that two musicals have been nominated in the category. It’s also only the second time ever two musicals received 10 or more nominations in the same year — EmiliaPérez leads the pack with 13 noms, while Wicked earned 10. Wicked is also the first film to receive 10 nominations without a best director or writing nomination.
Speaking of Emilia Pérez, much has been said about its star and best actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón, primarily about her controversial posts on the social platform X in which she expressed views on Muslims, George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars. The actress made history with her nomination, becoming the first openly trans person to be nominated for an acting Oscar. Despite the controversy, Gascón will attend the ceremony, with Netflix agreeing to pay the expenses.
The Fernanda Torres-starring I’m Still Here is the first Brazilian film to be nominated for best picture, as well as the first from any South American country in the category. If Torres wins best actress, she will become the first Latina best actress winner. Her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was nominated in the same category in 1999 for her performance in Central Station, which was also directed by I’m Still Here helmer Walter Salles. Montenegro was the first Brazilian to receive an Academy Award nomination for acting, making Torres the second.
Finally, former Succession co-stars Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong are both nominated in the best supporting actor category for their work in A Real Pain and The Apprentice, respectively. The first-time Oscar nominees, who played brothers Roman and Kendall Roy in all four seasons of Succession, are up for roles in their first major films since they finished making the HBO series. They frequently found themselves competing with each other for an award in the same Emmys category, with Strong taking home outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 2020 and Culkin winning the category in 2024.
The 2025 Oscars will air live at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The show will also stream live on Hulu for the first time ever. A special edition of 20/20, Countdown to the Oscars with Robin Roberts, premieres Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Along with Glinda’s wand, Ariana Grande took something else from the set of Wicked when the movie was over: a pair of prosthetic ears that her co-star Cynthia Erivo wore to portray Elphaba.
It seems that in real life Erivo has so many piercings that a prosthetic artist had to create a type of shell that fitted over her actual ears. Ari took a pair of those fake eras home with her and told BBC Radio 1 where she keeps them.
“Right now, they’re just, like, next to the printer,” said Ari. “With, like, pens and printer and then Cynthia’s ears.” She then joked, “But sometimes if I’m having guests over or if I put out a tray of whatever, I’ll just kind of leave them nearby to see if anyone gets a little confused.”
“I’m just kidding. I’ve never done that, but I will,” she added, deadpan. “No, yeah, they’re next to the printer for now. Framing them is weird.”
When the interviewer suggested she “hide them in the downstairs [bathroom] with no context, don’t explain them, that’s where they live,” she replied, “I love it!”
Millie Bobby Brown is opening up about how she knew her marriage to husband Jake Bongiovi was the “right” decision.
The Stranger Things star, who is the Vanity Faircover star for March, said that she and Bongiovi “were pretty united going into” marriage. Brown was 20 and Bongiovi was 22 when they tied the knot in May 2024 after three years together.
“We talked about our political views, what kind of family we want to build, the kind of home we want to live in, the kind of relationship we’re looking for, the kind of careers we want,” she said. “It’s such an important decision, and we wanted to make sure we were making the right one. I knew I was. It always felt right with him.”
She added that Bongiovi is “the first man I’ve ever loved and been in love with. If we’re not fully invested, then what’s the point? We have to be, and we always have been.”
The duo had two weddings: a small intimate ceremony in May 2024 and a second wedding in Tuscany in September 2024.
Looking ahead, Brown is gearing up for the final season of Stranger Things. The actress, who has starred in the hit Netflix series since 2016, wrapped filming in December.
“It wasn’t hitting me this entire time — until yesterday,” Brown said about filming the show’s penultimate scene. “I was on set, and I was like, ‘Well, I have one more day left.’ And I started crying. I don’t actually like to cry at work. I’m a really emotional person, but I try to stay super strong. It made me feel so uncomfortable. Jake was like, ‘It’s good, you have to get it out!’ and I just started welling up.”
