Obituary For Booker "Rodney" Stone

Booker “Rodney” Stone, 85, of Collinsville, Virginia, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026. He was born February 13, 1941, in Bassett, Virginia, to his late parents, Booker and Marie Shelton Stone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Mary Lee Scott Stone.

Rodney lived a life of kindness and integrity, marked by faith and a strong work ethic. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and a graduate of Bassett High School, class of 1959. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Whether he was at his church, his job, or out in the community, he was everyone’s “Papa.” After retiring from DuPont after 25 years, he found joy and purpose in being a part of the community he loved. Working during his retirement years was a way of nurturing meaningful connections with the people he cared for. The last seventeen years, Rodney worked at Dollar General Market in Collinsville, Virginia, where he was endearingly called the “Buggy Man.”

He could often be found at local ball games, supporting his grandchildren or cheering on other children he knew. Rodney was known to enjoy a good cup of coffee on the front porch or by the pool. He was a man of diverse interests; he was an avid runner and enjoyed bowling, coin collecting, fishing, and bird watching. He loved hunting and was a member of the High Standard Hunting Club.

His life made a meaningful impact on the family he loved so dearly. He will be remembered by all those who knew and loved him, including his daughter, Jaime Stone Powers (Charles); son, Clayton Booker Stone (Tonya); sisters, Connie Joyce (Mike), Anita Haden (Jack), Lovetta Franklin, Susan Stone; brother, Royal Stone (Susan); sister-in-law, Joan Prillaman (Tim); grandchildren, Lindsey, Corbin, Jackson, Dylan, Ava Claire, and Olivia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

Although services will be private, the family wishes to extend their gratitude to the VCU Medical Center; Hospital to Home Transpor, Mountain Valley Hospice; special nurses, Sarah, Elizabeth, Amy, and Laka; and all friends and family who have showered them with love and support.

Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.
