Obituaries

Daisy Young Barnes, 90, of Bassett, Virginia, entered her eternal rest Tuesday, May 26, 2026. She was born in Franklin County, Virginia, on June 27, 1935, to the late Milton Young and Daisy Edith Mason Young.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, General Jackson “Billy” Barnes; maternal grandparents, Madison Milton Young and Rainie McGhee Young; paternal grandparents, Jim Oat Mason and Ola Denver Ingram Mason; sister, Ann Howell; and brother, Roger Milton Young.

Daisy had a love for the Lord and was a faithful member of over 54 years at Oak Level Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 15 years. She was a graduate of Franklin County High School, class of 1954. Daisy completed one year in the D.E. class and earned a diploma in Retail Merchandising. She later took training courses at Pannill Knitting Company and earned a diploma in Machine Operations. In the mid-80’s, she received certificates in journalism and computer programing from Patrick Henry College. Daisy worked at Dupont for 17 years until she retired. She was an upstanding member of the community and participated in diverse organizations. Daisy was a notary, a member of the Golden Friendship Club, and an avid quilter who entered numerous quilting contests. She enjoyed working with the senior citizens at the Brethren Church in Bassett, Virginia, and was a member and program chairman of the Home Demonstration Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Bell Handy; sisters, Myrtle Hodges and Irene Holley; special niece, Donna Stone; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, and her special pet, Gigi.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Daisy Barnes to Oak Level Baptist Church, 7720 Oak Level Road, Bassett, Virginia 24055, or the Franklin County Rescue Squad, 147 W Court Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151.

A funeral service will be held Friday, May 29, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Bassett Chapel in Bassett, Virginia, with Pastor Daniel Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Young Family Cemetery, 1421 Fork Mountain Road, Bassett, Virginia. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
