Obituary For Earnest L. and Margaret Carter
After 67 years of unwavering love, devotion, and companionship, Margaret S. Carter, 86, and her beloved husband, Ernest L. Carter, 86, of Martinsville, Virginia, entered eternal rest only two days apart Margaret on Thursday, November 20, 2025, and Ernest on Saturday, November 22, 2025. Their passing, as close together as their lives had always been, is a testament to a bond that time could not break and death could not separate.
Margaret S. Carter
Born July 10, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia, Margaret was the daughter of the late Robert B. Shore and Gladys Thaman Shore. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Shore Jr., and sister, Betty Shore. Margaret is survived by her sister, Beverly F. Mason.
Margaret lived her life with a gentle heart and a joyful spirit. She was a woman of Baptist faith, who found deep joy in the simple blessings of life her family, her grandchildren, her animals, her home, and her kitchen. Margaret loved working in her yard, crafting, and preparing meals that brought everyone to the table. Holidays were her favorite time of year because they meant what mattered most to her: her family being together.
Ernest L. Carter
Born June 9, 1939, also in Richmond, Virginia, Ernest was the son of the late Worth H. Carter Sr. and Fannie West Carter. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Worth H. Carter Jr.
Ernest proudly served in the National Guard. He loved hunting, fishing, and any day spent on his numerous boats, but more than anything, he loved his family. His presence was steady, his guidance wise, and his devotion unwavering.
Margaret and Ernest were married on January 11, 1958, beginning a journey that spanned nearly seven decades. They built a life anchored in faith, family, and the kind of partnership that reflects true commitment. Their passing so close together brings comfort in knowing they entered eternal life hand-in-hand just as they walked through life.
Together, they are survived by: two sons: Ernest L. Carter Jr. (Jeanette) and James D. Carter (Kerri); One daughter: Cheryl Carter; six grandchildren: Gary Hall, Kayla Carter, Christian Carter, Carter Tanney, MacKenzie Carter, and Nicholas Carter; and special friend Glenn Dennis. They also leave behind extended family, friends, and all who were touched by their kindness, generosity, and steadfast love.
All services will be private. The family welcomes friends and family to join them on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, 1170 Windy Ridge Road Martinsville, Virginia 24112.
