Obituaries

Elizabeth Gayle Henderson Barker, 75, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2026. She was born on August 2, 1950, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Douglas Henderson and Barbara Fleming Henderson.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three grandchildren, Lee Hancock, Jamey Ross, and Annaleigh “Anna” Gammons.

Gayle was of the Baptist faith. She was a graduate of Martinsville High School, class of 1969. A highlight of her high school years was playing in the marching band and having the opportunity to play in the Macy’s Day Parade in New York. After high school, she continued her education at Radford University where she received her bachelor’s degree and later earned a master’s in education from the University of Virginia. Teaching became a lifelong passion for Gayle. As an educator from her college graduation until retirement, she poured her heart and soul into the lives of her students, often referring to them as “her kids.”

Outside of the classroom, Gayle was an avid reader who particularly enjoyed mystery novels. She found immense joy in music and dance. But there was nothing that could compare to the deep love she had for her family. Her grandbabies were her world, and she was intentional in spending time with them and making memories to last a lifetime. Her legacy of love and kindness will forever be imprinted on the hearts of her family, friends, and colleagues.

Left to cherish and honor her memory are her husband of six years, Donnie Edwin Hancock; daughter, Kelly Ross (Alan); sons, Christopher “Chris” Harding (Melissa), David Hancock, Phillip Hancock (Ganesa), Bradley Hancock (Kalia); sister, Lynn M. Williams; brother, Stephen Henderson; and grandchildren, Jennifer Martin, Lane Ross, Chase Ross, Macy Gammons, Russell Hancock, Oden Hancock, and Madeline Hancock.

A visitation will be held Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 3:00-4:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel.
