Obituary For John Lee McCain

John Lee McCain, 99, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026. He was born on November 15, 1926, in Danville, Virginia, to the late Tony McCain and Marie Edwards McCain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Pearl Scales McCain; his son, Jesse Heath McCain; daughter-in-law, Bernice Myrick McCain; and son-in-law, Michael D. Cook, Sr.

John served in the United States Army and was a proud World War II veteran. He was a member of Fieldale Lodge Post 78. John was the owner and operator of Spic-N-Span Cleaners until it closed. His motto was, “You wear, tear, and mess ’em, we clean, repair, and press ’em.”

He later retired from Stanley Furniture Company as a sample expeditor. However, he retired multiple times, often returning to work in furniture factories or dry cleaners, which was his passion.

John was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville. He enjoyed playing golf, watching NASCAR, boating, fishing, and camping at races. His favorite race car driver was Dale Earnhardt. He often traveled with friends to races and fishing trips. He also loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles and was a member of a local motorcycle club.

He is survived by his son, John Tyrone McCain; daughters, Shirley McCain Mitchell (Ronnie), Marvie “DeDee” Cook, Mary Vanessa Johnson (Ronn), Roberta Ragland (Dennis), Brinda Scales (David), and Linda Howard; numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 12:30 PM at First Baptist Church – East Martinsville, with Pastor Charles Whitfield officiating. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service. At other times, the family will receive friends at home, 1307 Carver Court, Martinsville, Virginia 24112.
