Obituaries

Mildred Keatts Gunter, 86, of Fieldale, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at Martinsville Health & Rehab. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished sister, and faithful friend whose kindness and gentle spirit touched all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 50 years, Jimmie Maynard Gunter; her brothers, Charlie Keatts and Edmond Keatts; and her sisters, Ella Keatts Kendrick and Olla Keatts Matthews.

Left to cherish her precious memory are her son, Mark Gunter; her daughter, Carolyn Lynn Gunter; her sisters, Nera Keatts Benard, Shirley Kirk and Lucille Keatts Kirk; her sister-in-law, Ann Gunter; and her nieces, Karen Gunter and Maria Gunter, along with many other loving family members and friends.

Mildred found joy in life’s simple blessings. She loved watching television, reading her Bible daily, caring for flowers, and admiring birds. She especially treasured the companionship of her beloved dog, Peanut. Above all, Mildred deeply loved her children and treasured the time she spent with family. She also enjoyed shopping and sharing life’s moments with those she loved.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service with visitation one hour prior to the service. Clyde Murray will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Mildred will be remembered for her loving heart, unwavering devotion to her family, and the warmth she shared with everyone around her. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
