Obituary For Rev. Sherman Ray Fields

Rev. Sherman Ray Fields, 82, of Bassett, Virginia passed away Saturday April 11, 2026 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Sherman was born June 19, 1943 in Grayson County, Virginia to the late William Everette and Lillie Hale Fields.

In 1969, Sherman answered his calling to preach the Gospel and faithfully served as pastor of Stuart Church of God, Plasterco Church of God, Bassett Church of God, and Bassett Outreach Ministries for more than 50 years. Only eternity will reveal the record of lives he touched and the sacrifices he made.

Sherman was also the Owner/Operator of Ray’s Construction. He built homes for many years and loved the mountains.

Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janetta Padgett Fields, daughter, Rhonda Fields Lahn (Robert), sons, Randall Ray Fields (Janet), and Stephen Jay Fields (Robin); sister, Guida Maxine Frost; grandchildren, Christina Lahn Best (Tim), Vera Wildeman, Ryan Fields, Autumn Fields Dillion (Jesse), Nathaniel Lahn (Renee), Benjamin Lahn, Wesley Lahn, Aliyah Fields Carter (Kaleb), and great grandchildren, Athan Best, Kate Best, Lilliana Lukaczewicz, Dante Dillion, Alexis Lahn, and twins, Liliana Dillion and Calliope Dillion.

In addition to his parents, Sherman is preceded in death by brother Floyd Ralph Fields, twin brother Rev. Herman Jay Fields, and sister, Euna Mae Stroud.

A funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Bassett Chapel at 1230 Oak Level Rd. Bassett, Virginia. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park immediately following the services.
