Obituaries

Roger Gray Horton, Sr., was born in Carroll County, VA., on October 15, 1939, to the late Roscoe and Mamie "June" Dalton Horton-Hajek. Although he loved the mountains, he quit school in the 8th grade, came to Martinsville to have a better life. He met the love of his life and married her and in April, they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

He went to work for American of Martinsville as a floor worker, while getting his GED and going to Averitt University and obtaining his electrician's degree. He retired from American as a plant electrical engineer. Roger opened his own electric company, Diamond Electric, and worked it until he retired in 2017 after suffering a stroke.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his stepfather, Joe Hajek, his son, Roger G. Horton, Jr., and a granddaughter, Shannon Horton Hines.

Surviving are his wife Shirley Brooks Horton, son and daughter-in-law, Roger T. "Tim", and Cathy Horton, daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda H., and Jeff Masters, granddaughter, Hannah Horton, and grandson, Joshua Gray Martin, five great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their gratitude to Mountain Valley Hospice, his caregivers, Jackie "Lil Feather", Kim, Nubia, and Gail, and a special thanks with love, to Tommy Adkins, and Todd Jones.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday March 21, 2025, in Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Carrow, and Rev. Adam Herod officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services beginning at 12:Noon.
