Obituaries

Sue Katherine Mauney Benfield, 91 of Martinsville, VA passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026, at King’s Grant Retirement Community. She was born on November 23, 1934, in Albermarle, NC to the late James Franklin Mauney and Bessie Joyner Mauney. In addition to the parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Presley Benfield, Jr.

Ms. Benfield was an enthusiastic bridge player and an active member of both her local bridge club and The Charity League. She also belonged to First Presbyterian Church where she participated in a circle group. She enjoyed trips to the beach, loved dancing, and was a devoted fan of Duke basketball. Above all, she took great pride in her role as a homemaker.

Surviving are her daughters, Barbara Benfield Taylor and Elizabeth Benfield Ritchy (Alexy Ritchy); son, James Linwood Benfield (Lin); grandchildren, Will Taylor (Lori), Matt Taylor (Beth), Kathryn Bearman (Ross), Philip Ritchy, and Sarah Ritchy; great-grandchildren, Miles Taylor, Josie Taylor, Evie Bearman, Bailey Bearman, and Penny Bearman.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026, at King’s Grant Retirement Community with Chaplain Bonnylee Witt officiating.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at King’s Grant for their care and support.
