Obituary For Thomas "Tommy" Lee Hayzlett

Thomas “Tommy” Lee Hayzlett, 84, of Axton, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026. He was born on August 31, 1941, in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late Lon Hayzlett and Reba Alice Kinder Hayzlett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Michael Hayzlett and Gary Hayzlett; sister, Anna Reynolds; and brothers, Charlie Racer, James Hayzlett, Robert “Bob” Hayzlett; first wife and mother of his son, Jackie Mottingly; second wife of fifty years and mother of his daughter, Patricia “Pat” Hayzlett.

Tommy was a member of Living Waters Outreach in Ridgeway, Virginia. He proudly served his country in the United States Marines. Tommy was employed with the Martinsville Sheriff’s Department for twenty years as a deputy, until his retirement. He simultaneously worked for Martinsville Memorial Hospital as a security officer. He had a strong work ethic that was evident in his discipline and the pride he took in his work. He was resolute in all areas of his life and had a good soul and a kind heart. He enjoyed lifting weights and loved his guns. Tommy will always be remembered as an amazing husband and father, leaving a void that can only be filled by the precious memories he left behind.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Lee Mundy Hayzlett; daughters, Debra “Debbie” Hayzlett Maxie (Jesse “Danny”); Theresa Spano, “Sissy” Elizabeth Klaus (Gary); sons, Tommy Hayzlett, Jr., Brian Reed; sister, Jean Flint; grandchildren, McKenzie Hayzlett, Jessica Hayzlett Smith (Robert) Amber Smith, Alyssa Maxie, Daniel Maxie, JoHanna Maxie, Patience Maxie, Danny Hayzlett (Robyn), Tiffany Bowers (Mark), Joshua Hayzlett (Aaris); and twenty great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel with Bishop Bud Sedwick officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The Martinsville & Henry County Veterans Honor Guard will present Military Honors.
