Obituaries

Melvin Ray Gunter, Jr., 50, of Martinsville, Virginia, transitioned from this earthly life Friday, August 22, 2025. He was born July 1, 1975, in Martinsville to the late Melvin Ray Gunter, Sr. and Shirley Ann Hill Gunter.

Ray was a dedicated employee of Carpetland as a sales manager. He loved all motor sports, particularly sportscar racing and NASCAR. He enjoyed music, concerts, cruising, going to the beach, and baking. Once he knew a person, he was quick-witted and enjoyed good conversation. His kindness even spilled over into his care for stray cats. Although his time on earth was far too brief, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

He is survived by his sister, Ginger Johnson; brothers, Fred Stuart, Michael Steen, Sr. (Lorena); special nephew, Michael Steen, Jr. (Whitney) and future niece, Harper Grey Steen; several nieces and nephews; and his “cuddle buddy,” Murphy.

A funeral will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 5:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
