Obituaries

Susan Gaines Craven, 58, of Martinsville, Virginia, entered her eternal rest Monday, January 12, 2026. She was born in Sanford, North Carolina, on May 8, 1967, to the late Henry and Emogene Gaines.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Karen Gaines Campbell.

Susan was a woman of Christian faith who was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Goldston, North Carolina. Her family was always her priority, and she found joy in staying home with her boys. Being a homemaker was a calling, and every part of their home was filled with her creativity, encouragement, and her amazing sense of humor. She was a wonderful host, skilled in developing her own recipes and creating wonderful meals. Susan did all she could to help others whenever it was needed. Being that Susan attended UNC at Chapel Hill, she was an avid Tar Heel fan. Her legacy of love and laughter will forever be imprinted on the hearts of everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Matthew Craven; sons, Matthew Scot Gaines, and Zachary Cole Craven; nephew, Jared Lee Campbell; brother-in-law, Harold Lee Campbell; and extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Susan’s memory to the charity of your choice.

Although all services will be private, the family wishes to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of love and kindness that has been shown during their time of grief.
