(NEW YORK) — The U.S. men’s national team defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 on Wednesday night in their highest-stakes 2026 World Cup match so far, clinching a spot in the round of 16.
It was the U.S. men’s team’s first World Cup knockout win in 24 years.
The U.S. takes on Belgium on July 6.
U.S. forward Folarin Balogun, who scored a goal in the first half, was handed a controversial red card in the 64th minute following a clash with an opposing player. The red card makes him ineligible for the next match.
Later, Malik Tillman followed up Balogun’s goal with a free kick in the 82nd minute, padding the U.S. lead.
Wednesday’s win, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, came after the team’s impressive first-place record in the group stage. The USMNT finished the group stage with a 2-1 record, with wins over Paraguay and Australia before a loss to Turkey, which occurred once the team had already secured a spot in the next round.
The matchup versus Bosnia-Herzegovina was the U.S. men’s team first knockout game following the earlier group stage.
After 48 teams descended upon Canada, Mexico and the United States, 32 teams remained in the knockout stages, which started earlier this week, vying to hoist the trophy on July 19.
With its loss, Bosnia-Herzegovina is eliminated from the World Cup.
Earlier Wednesday, Belgium defeated Senegal 3-2, securing its spot in the next round.
On Tuesday, Mexico defeated Ecuador to advance.
The round of 32 kicked off to a dramatic start on Monday, with Brazil coming from behind to beat Japan 2-1 before Paraguay eliminated Germany in penalty kicks , in one of the most shocking upsets of the tournament so far.
Morocco also topped Netherlands on Monday to clinch a spot in the next round.

(NEW YORK) — Two American men are just two wins away from winning this year’s U.S. Open in what would be a major breakthrough for American tennis.
Americans Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe won marathon quarterfinal matches overnight Tuesday, setting up a semifinal showdown that guarantees an American man will play in Sunday’s final at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Tiafoe came from behind to defeat fellow American Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) in a match that lasted nearly five hours Tuesday.
Shelton then upset defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in another five-set match — 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) — that lasted until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, the latest finish in U.S. Open history.
The No. 8-seeded Shelton will now face No. 11-seeded Tiafoe in the semifinals on Friday.
The last American man to play in the U.S. Open finals was Taylor Fritz in 2024. The last American man to win the Grand Slam tournament was Andy Roddick in 2003.
On the women’s side, two American players remain in contention.
Coco Gauff is scheduled to play Russia’s Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday in a quarterfinals match.
Jessica Pegula has already served her way into the semifinals, defeating fellow American Emma Navarro in a three-set quarterfinal match Tuesday night.
Pegula will play No. 1 seed and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday.
Gauff was the last American woman to win the singles title, taking home a victory in 2023.
The U.S. Open women’s and men’s singles finals will be played on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, respectively.

(NEW YORK) — NBA star LeBron James will make his home regular season debut with the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, Oct. 22, ESPN’s Malika Andrews announced Tuesday on “Good Morning America.”
James and the 76ers will play his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers in Philadelphia. The game will air on ESPN.
Two months later, on Christmas Day, James will face off against his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, and his son Bronny James.
LeBron James announced in July his decision to join the 76ers after spending eight seasons with the Lakers.
The four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP wrote on social media of his decision, “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.
His decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers puts him on a roster with all-stars Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey.
LeBron James, also the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, citing his agent, Rich Paul.
LeBron James’ first season with the 76ers will be his 24th season in the NBA. He previously played for the Miami Heat in addition to the Cavaliers and the Lakers.
