Nick Reiner will be charged with the murders of his parents, renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, Los Angeles officials announced on Tuesday.

The charges of two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstance of multiple murders, will be filed on Tuesday afternoon, LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said at a news conference on Tuesday.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, Hochman said.

“No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty,” the DA said.

The Reiners’ daughter found her parents stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Sunday, sources told ABC News.

Asked if a murder weapon was recovered, Hochman confirmed a knife was used, but he added, “As to where and how the weapon was located, or will be located, that will actually be evidence we’ll present in court.”

Nick Reiner, 32, had been living on his parents’ property, according to a former family security guard, but was not at home when his parents’ bodies were discovered, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

He was found near the University of Southern California on Sunday night thanks to “good, solid police work” and was taken into custody, police said. He is in jail on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail, police said.

Nick Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson — who helped defend Karen Read in Massachusetts — told reporters on Tuesday that the 32-year-old had not yet completed the standard medical clearance to appear in court.

Nick Reiner had been open about battling drug addiction since he was a teenager. In 2016, he worked with his dad on the movie Being Charlie, which was based largely on his struggle with drug addiction.

On Saturday night, Rob Reiner and Nick Reiner got into an argument at a holiday party; Nick Reiner was seen acting strangely at the party, sources told ABC News.

Rob Reiner, a famed director, producer and actor, is known for massive Hollywood hits, including The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Stand By Me, This is Spinal Tap and A Few Good Men.

Rob Reiner and Singer, who met while Rob Reiner was directing When Harry Met Sally …, married in 1989 and share three children, Jake Reiner, Nick Reiner and Romy Reiner.

Rob Reiner is also survived by daughter Tracy Reiner with his first wife, Penny Marshall, who died in 2018.

Nicholas Sparks is known for his romance novels, many of which have been adapted into feature films. The author has teamed up with director M. Night Shyamalan for a new supernatural love story, and he recently told Variety the collaboration was a long time coming.

“A long time ago, way back when The Notebook was being adapted for the screen, they approached a writer to write the script — it was M. Night Shyamalan,” Sparks said to the outlet. “He was busy writing this movie, The Sixth Sense. I don’t know if you’ve heard of that movie. I wonder how that eventually did?”

Now, Sparks and Shyamalan have created the new book Remain, which debuts in bookstores on Tuesday. A film adaptation directed by Shyamalan starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor is also on the way.

The pair set out on their collaborative journey by pitching ideas that combined their respective genres: romance and sci-fi. Sparks wrote the novel based on an idea pitched by Shyamalan, and then Shyamalan wrote the film’s screenplay. Another concept, based on a pitch from Sparks, could be possible down the line, the author says.

“If this all works, and we’re in between projects we might do mine. It’s a good love story, little scary,” Sparks said.

As for spoiler-free teases of what fans can expect from Remain, Sparks opened up the possibility of the novel and the upcoming film adaptation not being exactly the same. 

“One of the questions I asked Night about is, ‘Do you want the ending to be the same? Do you want the twist to be the same?’” Sparks said. “And we made a decision about that. You’ve gotta read the book and see the movie.”

Eric Dane is opening up about his future in acting while living with ALS.

During a panel hosted by the I Am ALS organization on Tuesday night, the Euphoria star said that moving forward, he plans to focus his acting career on roles that involve ALS.

“I’m fairly limited in what I can do physically as an actor, but I still have my brain, and I still have my speech,” Dane said from the stage, which he shared with the I Am ALS founders and his colleagues from the series Brilliant Minds.

“I’m willing to do just about anything. I’ll take on any role, but I think from here on out, it’s going to have to be, you know, ALS-centric,” he said.

“It’s gonna be very difficult for me to play any other role where, you know … look at the 800-pound gorilla in the room. And I’m fine with that,” he continued. “I’m fine with that. I’m grateful that I can still work in any capacity.”

Dane also discussed his experience acting in Brilliant Minds, in which he plays a firefighter living with ALS.

“I’ve never played a character who’s going through something … I’m dealing with in real time, in real life as well,” he said. “It was hard, and there were moments where it was very difficult for me to even get the lines out, but I overall, I was really grateful for the experience. I found it to be a bit cathartic.”

Dane said his condition can be disheartening, saying that though he has “no reason to be in a good spirit at any time” he still manages to find joy.

“It’s encouraging for me to know that I actually can have, like, a buoyant spirit in the face of something so horrible,” he added.

Dane also said he felt it was important to speak out about his ALS journey.

“It’s imperative that I share my journey with as many people as I can, because I don’t feel like my life is about me anymore,” he said.

The former Grey’s Anatomy star announced in April that he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In an interview that aired in June on Good Morning America, Dane told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer he was “fighting as much as I can.”

“There’s so much about it that’s out of my control,” he added at the time.

Dane, a father of two daughters, went on to describe himself as “resilient” in both his fight against ALS and his fight to stay optimistic.

“I’m very hopeful … I don’t think this is the end of my story,” he said, speaking with Sawyer. “And whether it is or it isn’t, I’m gonna carry that idea with me.”

ALS, short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a degenerative neurological disorder where the symptoms worsen over time, according to the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH states that ALS causes motor neurons — a type of nerve cell in the brain and spinal cord — to deteriorate, causing the muscles to weaken, and eventually leads to paralysis, taking away a person’s ability to move, speak or even breathe.

There is currently no known cure for ALS, but some treatments, and physical and speech therapies, may slow down the progression of the disorder and improve an ALS patient’s quality of life.

The NIH states that the average prognosis for ALS patients is two to five years of survival from the time of first symptoms, but there is a range: 10% of people with the condition live 10 years or more.
