Jones hearings delayed again

Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Bethany Harrison has recused herself as special prosecutor in cases involving Martinsville Mayor L.C. Jones, citing a “material conflict” after consulting the Virginia State Bar.

A judge appointed Colonial Heights Commonwealth’s Attorney Alfred Gray Collins III as her replacement—the third special prosecutor on the civil recall petition and second on a state police investigation into city spending under former manager Aretha Ferrell-Benavides.

Jones, suspended in February but reinstated last week, denies wrongdoing. The recall petition alleges bribery and conflicts of interest. A hearing was canceled, with a civil trial set for June 5.
