Man arrested after shooting at deputy

A Patrick Springs man has been arrested following a Monday morning incident, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

James Daniel Biggs, 34, of 2355 Dogwood Road, was arrested by deputies and charged with Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, Abduction, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Violation of a Protective Order, and Reckless Handling of a Firearm.

The incident began a 4:04 AM, when the Patrick County 911 Center received a call that a man with a gun was holding people against their will at 2355 Dogwood Road.  As Senior Deputy Matt Hodges arrived on scene, a single shot was fired by a man who was standing outside of the residence.  Hodges exited his patrol vehicle with his issued patrol rifle, took cover, and  was able to identify the suspect from approximately 60 yards away as being Biggs.

A standoff ensued as Biggs was holding the weapon at his side.  Members of the sheriff’s office tactical response team responded and began to negotiate with Biggs, who was taken into custody after approximately 30 minutes of negotiations.  Biggs sustained minor injuries during the arrest.

“We are fortunate that this incident did not end with loss of life, and I am grateful for our specially trained tactical members who were able to resolve this incident without an escalation of violence,” Smith said in a Monday news release. The sheriff added,  “Our tactical team exists for one reason, and that is to save lives;  but let me be crystal clear, we will eliminate any threat of serious harm to our citizens and our deputies, without hesitation, if that threat becomes imminent.”

The firearm and suspected methamphetamine were recovered from the scene.  Biggs is being held without bail in the Patrick County Jail.
