Obituary For James "Jimmy" Leonard Cassell

James “Jimmy” Leonard Cassell, 86, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born on November 9, 1938, to the late Elder Leonard Lester Cassell and Mary “Mae” Joyce Cassell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Margie Joyce Cassell.

Jimmy proudly served in the United States Army. A devoted member of Blackberry Baptist Church, he faithfully served as a Deacon, Usher, and caretaker of the church cemetery for many years. He retired after several years at Fieldcrest/Cannon working in the Weave Room and was a bus driver for many years with the Henry County Public School System.

His commitment to community service extended beyond the church. He was a past member of the Bassett Rescue Squad, where he served as a former captain and a member of the Dive Team. Additionally, he was a dedicated member of the Bassett Fire Department, the Sanville Ruritan Club, and the American Legion.

Jimmy had a passion for fishing, bowling, and playing Rook. He also cherished spending time with family and friends, creating lasting memories with those he loved. A true fighter, he was a multi-time cancer survivor who faced each challenge with resilience and faith.

Jimmy is survived by his son, Kippy Cassell (Lisa); his daughter, Linda C. Plaster (Don); two grandchildren, Joshua Cassell (Ashley) and Niki Plaster (Aaron); and four great-grandchildren, Annabelle Cassell, Zoey Cassell, Marleigh Escobedo, and Saige Escobedo. He is also survived by his brother, Carl Cassell (Shirley); his sister, Mary Frances Ross; and a host of other family members and friends.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Blackberry Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Blackberry Baptist Church, with Pastor Chad Janey officiating. Burial will take place at Old Center Church Cemetery.
