Nine public schools in Martinsville and Henry and Patrick counties earned Virginia’s highest performance rating in results released Wednesday.
Seventeen of the area’s 24 schools met or exceeded state expectations. That’s about 71 percent, compared with 70 percent statewide.
All four high schools earned the “Distinguished” designation. Patrick County High had the area’s highest framework score, followed by Martinsville, Bassett and Magna Vista among high schools.
Five elementary schools also earned distinguished ratings: Rich Acres and Sanville in Henry County, and Blue Ridge, Meadows of Dan and Woolwine in Patrick County.
Every Martinsville school met or exceeded expectations. Seven schools across Henry and Patrick counties were rated “Approaching Expectations.” None received the lowest designation, “Needs Intensive Support.”
All 24 schools are fully accredited. Accreditation measures compliance with state operating requirements, while performance ratings consider academics, student growth, attendance and readiness after high school.
The results reflect the 2025-26 school year. State officials say a revised growth formula helped recognize student progress.
Governor Abigail Spanberger also announced a 26-point-seven-million-dollar school improvement grant opportunity. Applications open Friday to help eligible schools strengthen instruction and support students with the greatest needs.
