Accuser of former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky expected to recant testimony

(NEW YORK) — Jerry Sandusky is due to return to court next month as one of his accusers is expected to recant his testimony against the former Penn State assistant football coach who was convicted of sexually abusing boys for more than a decade.
A judge scheduled an evidentiary hearing for Sept. 8 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.
Sandusky, who is now 82, has been serving a decades-long prison sentence after he was convicted in 2012 of abusing boys.
An accuser known as Victim 10, who testified for the prosecution at Sandusky’s trial, is now prepared to tell the court Sandusky did not abuse him.

(SAN FRANCISCO) — One person is dead and three others are missing after a boat with more than a dozen passengers aboard capsized and sank in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island on Tuesday, according to local authorities.
Authorities said they believe 20 people were aboard the Volare, a 50-foot cabin cruiser based out of Stockton, California, when it was hit by a wave, causing it to capsize.
The person who died was taken to the shore severely injured and, despite CPR being administered, was pronounced dead, officials said. He has not been identified but authorities said he was an adult male.
Three people were taken to the hospital and reported to be in stable condition. They were expected to be released later Tuesday.
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen told reporters that authorities believe that there was some kind of memorial service that the 20 passengers, all adults and mostly comprised of family members, were engaging in on the vessel when it capsized.
The U.S. Coast Guard will continue the search-and-rescue efforts for the three missing passengers overnight.
The San Francisco Fire Department said it initially received a call for a fire on the boat at 3:30 p.m. local time. However, authorities said they haven’t yet seen evidence that there was a fire on board.
The U.S. Coast Guard, along with several local authorities, helped respond to the incident.
Rescue swimmers and scuba divers were also deployed.
Earlier, authorities said they believed there were 19 people aboard and that they were looking for two missing passengers.

(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) — The FBI said it’s offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect in a string of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri.
Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, is not only the suspect in Tuesday’s five shootings, but he is also wanted for allegedly shooting at a car days earlier in Wyandotte County, Kansas, the FBI said.
On June 11, an adult and a child were driving in Wyandotte County when their car was struck by gunfire, police said.
Then on Tuesday evening, five shooting incidents — including one that was deadly — unfolded in close succession from west to east along the Interstate 70 area, according to Kansas City, Missouri, Police Chief Stacey Graves.
The four surviving victims — three adults and one teenager — told officers they were driving when one or more shots were fired into their cars, Graves said.
The teen was hospitalized in stable condition, one adult suffered life-threatening injuries, and the other two surviving victims had non-life-threatening injuries, Graves said.
An Uber driver taking passengers to the Kansas City World Cup game was among the victims, Graves said, and responding officers drove the fans to the match.
A motive is not known, Graves said.
On Tuesday night, Sanchez-Munoz allegedly barricaded himself inside a house in Independence, Missouri, east of Kansas City, and engaged in a standoff with police, authorities said.
At about 12:45 a.m., police reported the house was on fire, and firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze, Graves said. When responders entered the house, Sanchez-Munoz was not there, Graves said.
Sanchez-Munoz is considered armed and dangerous, authorities said, and they urge anyone who sees him to call 911.

(WASHINGTON) — A federal district court in Massachusetts on Tuesday issued a temporary order blocking the U.S. Postal Service from implementing President Donald Trump’s 2026 executive order on mail-in voting.
The same court in June blocked other portions of Trump’s order in 23 states and Washington, D.C., related to the Department of Homeland Security’s compilation of a federal voter citizenship list and requirement that states submit voter registration lists to the USPS, in addition to printing ballots that can be easily tracked.
Both injunctions apply only to the Nov. 3 midterm elections as litigation continues. Both indicated that the administration likely exceeded its authority in attempting to impose election requirements on states, which have the primary responsibility under law for regulating voting.
Both cases are likely to be addressed by the U.S. Supreme Court very soon. The court will essentially decide whether Trump can implement the order for the November elections.
The issue of standing remains a key question in both cases. The administration alleges that neither the states nor the coalition of nonpartisan voting rights groups has suffered concrete injury from the executive order that would allow them to challenge it.
The Trump administration has already appealed the states’ case to the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking permission to move forward. That decision could come down at any time, as soon as this week.
