Keke Palmer says playing new mom in ‘The ‘Burbs’ ‘was kind of cathartic’

Keke Palmer stars as a new mother on Peacock’s The ‘Burbs, a new take on the 1989 Tom Hanks film of the same name. The new series follows Palmer’s Samira and Rob, played by Jack Whitehall, after relocating to Rob’s childhood home, where they uncover dark secrets about the house across the street and the neighborhood.

The series filmed after Keke gave birth to her son, Leodis Jackson, and she tells E! News playing Samira helped her see her own journey from an outside perspective.

“It was just really awesome having some space between my reality and the characters,” Keke says. “Because it actually was kind of cathartic to see it from the outside looking in of like, it is really hard to reconnect with yourself after having a baby and reconnect with your partner. And I think it’s something we talk about, but we don’t talk about it enough, because it really is a thing.”

Keke notes she and Jack, who became a father in 2023, recognized their own experiences in their characters’ storylines.

“[W]e’ve been there. Where you’re nervous trying to figure out, ‘Am I being a good parent? Is this my role? And does my partner, do we have love? Did we move too fast?’” she says. “There’s all this confusion that I think a lot of new parents will relate to. And even people have been a parent for years. They’ll be like, ‘I remember that.’”

Keke also praises how the show generally addresses serious issues while “leaning in in a way that makes it fun for the audience.”

“I think that’s something that also excited me because there are a lot of stuff we’re covering in the show,” she says.

The ‘Burbs is now streaming on Peacock.

‘Send Help’ tops box office for second week with a little help from the cold — and football

Send Help was helped to a second week atop the box office by Mother Nature — and the NFL.

The thriller by Sam Raimi took $10 million in its second week, according to Box Office Mojo, with a 47% drop in revenue from its debut. As Variety notes, Super Bowl weekend is usually slow at the box office, and below-freezing temperatures across the East Coast and the Midwest also kept people away from the theater.

Debuting in second place was the romantic comedy Solo Mio with $7.2 million, while last week’s #2, Iron Lung, dropped to #3, taking in $6 million. Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience, a concert documentary from the superstar K-pop group, debuted at #4 with a gross of $5.56 million.

Another new debut, a remake of Dracula starring Caleb Landry Jones and Christoph Waltz, landed at #5 with $4.5 million. The only other debut in the top 10 was horror film The Strangers: Chapter 3 at #8.

Of note, Variety also reports that Marty Supreme has become A24’s highest-grossing worldwide release, taking in $147 million globally. It out-earned the studio’s previous record-holder Everything Everywhere All at Once, which has earned $142 million.

Here are the top 10 films at the box office:

1. Send Help — $10 million
2. Solo Mio — $7.2 million
3. Iron Lung –– $6 million
4. Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience — $5.56 million
5. Dracula –– $4.5 million
6. Zootopia 2 — $4 million
7. Avatar: Fire and Ash — $3.5 million
8. The Strangers: Chapter 3 –– $3.4 million
9. Shelter — $2.4 million
10. Melania — $2.37 million

Nancy Guthrie abduction latest: Savannah Guthrie pleads with public, ‘We need your help’

(NEW YORK) — “Today” host Savannah Guthrie on Monday released a new direct plea to the public, begging for help to find her mom, Nancy Guthrie, more than one week after the 84-year-old was abducted.

“We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help,” Savannah Guthrie said in an Instagram video, speaking directly to the camera.

“We believe our mom is still out there. We need your help,” she said. “Law enforcement is working tirelessly, around the clock, trying to bring her home.”

“She was taken, and we don’t know where, and we need your help,” she said. “So I’m coming on just to ask you … no matter where you are … if you see anything, if you hear anything, if there’s anything at all that seems strange to you, that you report to law enforcement.”

Savannah Guthrie thanked everyone for their prayers and love, and said she believes her mom is feeling those prayers, too.

The search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie began after she was abducted from her home near Tucson, Arizona, early on Sunday, Feb. 1, authorities said.

The exact time of her kidnapping is not clear. Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera disconnected at 1:47 a.m., Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said, and then at 2:12 a.m., the camera software detected a person. At 2:28 a.m., Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker app disconnected from her phone, which was left behind at her house, Nanos said.

This weekend, faced with a demand for a bitcoin ransom and a Monday deadline by someone claiming to be Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapper, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings said they’d pay for their mothers return.

“We received your message and we understand,” Savannah Guthrie said in an Instagram video this weekend. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”

The message Savannah Guthrie references in her new Instagram post is the same message the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department said they were studying Friday, according to a source familiar with the investigation. Investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of the latest message, which was received by a Tucson television station, nor any of the other ransom notes mentioning Nancy Guthrie, according to the source.

As the search intensifies, a 5 p.m. Monday deadline set in an initial ransom note from earlier last week is the point of focus for authorities, though investigators are still not certain of the ransom notes’ authenticity and continue to pursue all leads, a source familiar with the investigation told ABC News on Monday.

Investigators have returned repeatedly to the home of Savannah Guthrie’s sister, Annie Guthrie, where Nancy Guthrie enjoyed dinner and a game night before returning to her home a few minutes away on the night of Saturday, Jan. 31.

Investigators have also returned to Nancy Guthrie’s home, where they’ve examined rooftop cameras, towed away a car and made inquiries of neighbors.

The sheriff’s department said it is “an active and ongoing investigation,” but added that “investigators have not identified any suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles connected to this case.”

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.

(SANTA CLARA, Calif) — Dominating the New England Patriots in a defensive game, the Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl 60, 29-13. It was the franchise’s second Super Bowl title in its history.

After a first half that had no touchdowns and ended with the Seahawks leading purely on field goal points courtesy of kicker Jason Myers, Seattle scored the first touchdown of the game in fourth quarter, bringing the Seahawks’ lead to 19-0.

The Pats eventually scored two touchdowns of their own, also in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to beat Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold and his team. Darnold is now the first starting quarterback in history to win a Super Bowl after playing with more than five teams.

Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III was named MVP, finishing the night with 135 rushing yards and 26 receiving yards. He’s the first running back to be named Super Bowl MVP since 1998.

Myers, meanwhile, set a Super Bowl record by scoring five field goals.

Bad Bunny brings Puerto Rican culture, Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin to halftime show stage

Bad Bunny brought his Puerto Rican culture to the stage at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California, during the Super Bowl halftime show, along with a collection of his hit songs, starting with “Tití Me Preguntó.”

He began the performance wearing an all-white football jersey-like outfit with “Ocasio” on the back — the star’s last name — while walking through a field of tall crops. He went on to perform a large collection of hit songs, including “BAILE INoLVIDABLE” and “NUEVAYoL” on an elaborate set that was set up to resemble a Puerto Rican neighborhood, with a barber shop, market, liquor store, men playing dominos and more.

Midway through the show, the star crashed through a roof onto a new set before continuing the show uninterrupted. We also saw a couple getting married; ABC News has confirmed it was an actual wedding.

At one point, Bad Bunny was seen paying homage to his recent success, handing a Grammy award to a young boy on stage. During the song “El Apagón,” or “The Blackout,” Bad Bunny climbed up on an electrical pole — seemingly a reference to the power failures that Puerto Rico has experienced since Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Appearing on the Jumbotron behind Bad Bunny were the words, “THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE,” which is what the artist said in his acceptance speech at the Grammys.

Toward the end of the set, Bad Bunny said, “God Bless America” in English, and then reeled off the names of nearly every country in the Americas, including the U.S.A. and Puerto Rico.

Fireworks erupted at the end of the performance during a rendition of his hit song “DtMF.”

The show also included special guests Pedro Pascal, Alix Earle, Karol G, Jessica Alba and Cardi B dancing on the field, before Lady Gaga popped up to perform a Latin arrangement of her hit “Die With a Smile.” Another surprise guest, Ricky Martin, sang a part of Bad Bunny’s song “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii.”

The performance marks a turning point for the Spanish-language genre and Puerto Rican culture, something integral to the artist’s identity. Bad Bunny made history at last weekend’s Grammys when his album became the first fully Spanish-language project to win album of the year.
