Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler joined ‘GMA’ to discuss their record-breaking film. (ABC News)
Sinners star Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler are opening up on making Oscar nominations history.
The actor-director duo sat down for an interview with Good Morning America‘s Chris Connelly to discuss Sinners, which gathered a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, and their partnership, which has been over a decade in the making.
Coogler and Jordan recalled meeting in a Starbucks in 2011 to discuss their first joint project, Fruitvale Station.
“He reassured me. ‘Mike, I think you’re a movie star. Let’s go do this,'” Jordan said Coogler told him at the time.
The pair also discussed the moment they both realized that they had broken Oscars history on Oscar nomination morning.
Jordan said he woke up to missed messages and called his mother. “It felt great. You know, just to kind of hear her happiness and joy and knowing how much that she poured into me.”
Coogler said he watched the nominations with his spouse, Zinzi Coogler, who is also nominated as a producer on the film, and the pair celebrated with waffles.
Sinners marks the fifth collaboration between Coogler and Jordan, a partnership that includes the Creed movies and Black Panther.
Coogler reflected on what makes Jordan such an effective presence on screen.
“There’s a magic to Mike that I think like Tom Hanks has, where you see him and you care about him,” Coogler said. “As a character, he does everything. So what that gives him is an incredible amount of empathy when he’s on the screen,” Coogler said, adding that he also has “incredible drive.”
The pair said working together for as many years as they have has allowed them to work in sync.
“We complement one another,” said Jordan.
“You kind of know what the other person might need at a particular time to achieve a certain goal,” Coogler added.
Ed, James and Henry in ‘Minions & Monsters.’ (Illumination, Universal Pictures)
The final trailer for Minions & Monsters has arrived.
Universal Pictures and Illumination have released a new trailer for the upcoming animated family film set in the Despicable Me universe.
This new film follows “the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created,” according to an official description.
The trailer starts with the minions arriving in Hollywood. A classic movie trailer voice narrates through voice-over.
“In Hollywood, the new stars of the silver screen changed the face of the motion picture industry forever. The Minions are back with a touch of mystery,” the voice says.
The film’s voice cast includes Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Trey Parker, Bobby Moynihan and Phil LaMarr.
Pierre Coffin, a director on the first three Despicable Me movies, as well as the first Minions film, helmed Minions & Monsters. Additionally, he provides the voice to all of the Minions, as he has done since their film debut back in 2010.
Minions and The Secret Life of Pets writer Brian Lynch penned the script and also serves as an executive producer on the project.

Dave Coulier is opening up about the difficult reality of his ongoing cancer recovery, while also sharing some hopeful news with fans.
In a video posted to Instagram on Friday, the former Full House star gave followers a candid update on his health months after revealing his diagnosis with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“Hi, it’s Dave, with an update,” Coulier began the clip, acknowledging that many fans have noticed he looks and sounds different lately.
The actor explained that the changes are the result of the “extensive radiation” he underwent to treat carcinoma in his throat, in addition to battling lymphoma.
Coulier shared that the treatment has taken a major physical toll, revealing that he has not been able to eat solid food for months and has lost 45 pounds during the process. He also said the radiation has impacted his ability to speak.
Still, the comedian delivered some encouraging news amid the difficult recovery.
According to Coulier, recent scans and his overall prognosis are looking positive for both the carcinoma in his throat and the lymphoma.
While recovering away from the spotlight, Coulier said he has been staying busy creatively, spending time making artwork and doing creative writing offline.
The update prompted an outpouring of support from friends and fans in the comments section.
Kelly Rizzo, the widow of late Full House star Bob Saget, wrote, “You are so very loved, Dave. And truly no one is stronger than you. God bless you wonderful friend. Wish Bob was here to make you laugh.”
His former Full House co-star Andrea Barber, who played Kimmy Gibbler on the sitcom, also shared her support, commenting, “You’re as handsome and funny as ever. I love you, poo poo!”
Earlier this year, Coulier appeared on Good Morning America to share another update on his recovery journey.
“It’s been a roller coaster ride for sure,” Coulier said during a live February 2026 interview. “I’m in remission with both cancers. And what a journey this has been.”
The actor also used the appearance to encourage others to stay proactive about their health and screenings.
“I never wanted to be the poster boy for cancer, believe me, but now I feel like I can encourage people to get those prostate exams and mammograms and just talk to your doctors and get ahead of this,” he said. “Because even though I’m in remission, I feel like cancer is always in the rearview mirror … so early detection really means everything.”
