Obituaries

Carlene Oakes, 91, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026. She was born in Bassett, Va. December 17, 1934, to Jerry Thomas “J.T.” Ingram and Berta Bell Arnold Ingram. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Alvin Lloyd Oakes.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Oakes of Martinsville; daughters Susan Smith (Harry) of Delaware and Shelia Grogan (Mike) of Martinsville; grandsons, Brandon Grogan (Megan), Brett Grogan (Natalie), Lindsey Smith and Jacob Smith; great grandchildren, McKinley Grogan and Mabry Grogan.

Carlene was owner operator of Oakes Insurance Agency for over 40 years. She loved her family and especially her grandchildren.

The family is very appreciative of the care, comfort and kindness Carlene received from the staff and employees at the Landmark Center in Patrick County. They also greatly appreciate the care and comfort provided by Mountain Valley Hospice.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Roselawn Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Martinsville Henry County SPCA, 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, VA. 24112 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
