Doris McGuire Herndon, 85, of Martinsville, Va., passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022. She was born on October 22, 1936, to Roy Lee McGuire and Virginia Jane Hairfield McGuire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Robertson.

Doris is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, John Dudley Herndon Sr.; their three sons, John "Rooster" Herndon (Sandra), Allen Herndon (Renee), and Bobby-Dean Herndon; six grandchildren, Ruby Smith (Shannon), Becky Ray (Dwayne), Amanda Arnold (Jake), Megan Herndon (Kris), Becca Bartholomew (Brandon), and Allen Herndon Jr.; two step-grandchildren, Sierra Cochran (Jerry), and Cole Watson; nine great-grandchildren, Caillie, Morgan, Olivia, Eli, Grayson, Parker, Harper, Nixon, and Ellis; two sisters, Vera Haley and Barbara Harris; and one brother, James McGuire.

Doris ran and in-home daycare where she cared for many babies and children for many years. She loved and cherished her husband, Dudley, dearly. They took extraordinary care of one another and set a true example of a loving marriage throughout nearly 66 years of marriage. Doris was a cornerstone of the family and deeply loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and siblings. Above all else, Doris loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church where she served in the nursery for 52 years.

A visitation will be held Thursday, August 18, 2022, from 5 until 7 p.m. at McKee-Stone Chapel in Martinsville. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 19, 2022, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church at 10 a.m. and will be officiated by Pastors Robbie Benfield, Dean White and George Agnew. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
