Obituaries

Hubert L. Chaney, 89, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Good Samaritan House in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born on December 23, 1935, in Patrick County, Virginia to the late John and Lydia Chaney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Olene Hancock Chaney; five brothers, Ronnie, Glen, Bobby, Buford, and Laine Chaney; and three sisters, Lovelene Boyd, Sylvia Reed, and Ada Mae “Hazel” Johnson.

A hardworking man, Hubert was self-employed and owned his own construction company. He also operated a farm, where he raised cattle. He loved spending time with his family and friends and was a dedicated member of Stanleytown Amazing Grace Baptist Church.

He is survived by his son, James Michael Chaney (fiancé Amy); two special grandchildren, Daniel Lemons and Jacob Lemons; his brother, Johnnie “Douglas” Chaney; his sister, Mabel Watkins (Wayne); and a host of other family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Robert “Bobby” Reed officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
