Obituary For Jacqueline (Jackie) Sword Moore

Jacqueline (Jackie) Sword Moore, 87, of Martinsville, VA passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 18th with her children by her side. She was born August 29th, 1938 in Saltville, VA to the late Lora Clapp Sword and Joe Marshall (Pete) Sword. Jackie grew up with 4 siblings and many cousins in an area of Saltville called the “Quarry” - she was always proud of her Quarry roots.

Jackie was a bit of a tomboy, courtesy of her older brothers, and loved all sports. She was the pitcher for the church softball team and all three of her kids enjoyed cheering her on at Spencer Ruritan Field. Her career as an executive secretary began early in life, first at TK McKee Hospital, then Gravely Furniture/Ridgeway Clocks, and finally at Bassett- Walker. English grammar was her specialty so each CEO she worked for took advantage of her skills in that department. Jackie relaxed by reading novels and biographies, her favorites were of Civil War generals, and by doing crossword puzzles. She was a big Jeopardy fan so family knew not to call at 7:30pm.

Jackie loved her home. She loved to garden, to decorate, and to cook and bake - a talent that her husband celebrated and encouraged. After she retired, she and Morris were able to travel more, go on family outings, and fellowship with their many friends.

She loved the Lord. While Morris served as an elder of Rich Acres Christian Church for nearly 50 years, she was the woman behind the man, always with a sweet smile - she loved her church family. She was active in all groups at church, including the choir, Women’s Fellowship as the president for years, and Sunday School, often teaching on Sunday and Wednesday nights.

Jackie was married to Morris Moore, her high school sweetheart and love of her life for 63 years before his passing in 2020. She is beloved by her children - Kim Myers (Tim) of Ridgeway, VA, Suzy Ginter (Greg) of Panama City Beach, FL, and David Moore (Vanessa) of Salem, VA. She also leaves behind her adoring grandchildren - Mark Myers (Tiffany), Amanda Myers Compton (Chris), Dustin Ginter (Sarah), Lora Ginter, Chase Ginter, and Zachary Moore; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Caleb, Hannah, Samuel, Caden and Madeline Myers, and Jackson Compton.

She is survived by her youngest sister whom she cherished, Judy Sword Plummer, of Murfreesboro, TN and nieces and nephews she treasured. She was preceded in death by sister, Lois Nutter, and brothers, William “Bill” Sword, and James “ Bud” Sword. They remained close and loving all their lives.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 21st with Pastor Creighton Beatty officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00- 3:00 P.M. on Sunday at Norris Funeral Home with the service to follow. Burial will be private at a later date at Roselawn Burial Park.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff and medical workers at King’s Grant for all the love, care, and kindness shown to Jackie during her time there.
