Obituary For John Alee Wimbush

John Alee Wimbush, 94, of Greensboro, NC, and formerly of Martinsville, VA, peacefully passed away at his home on Monday, January 27, 2025. He was born on April 30, 1930, to the late John Rufus Wimbush and Nannie Lou Wimbush. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Westover Norman Wimbush; sister, Edna Barbour; brothers, Garland Wimbush, Eugene Wimbush, Raymond Wimbush, James LeRoy Wimbush, Vincent Wimbush, and Doug Wimbush; and a great-granddaughter, NaJada Joyce.

John honorably served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. He took great pride in his military service and was actively involved in Veterans Day programs, often speaking to students in his community about his experiences and survival during the war. As a dedicated member of Fresh Harvest Christian Church, John served faithfully as a Deacon and served on the Usher Board. He was known for his humility, attentive listening, and devotion to his family and friends, always showing care by remembering the small things that mattered most.

After retiring from Virginia Carolina Freight Line as a truck driver, John embraced the joys of a simple life. He was admired for his sense of humor, frequently saying, “Oh Lord, Have Mercy” and “Sho Nuff,” phrases that brought a smile to everyone around him. He loved gardening, visiting the local Walmart, Bojangles, and food banks, watching the BET Network, and tinkering with old junk cars.

John’s legacy is cherished by his six children: Sylvester Wimbush (Phyllis), Clarkie Woods (Richard), Pamela Howard, Judith Redd (Ronald), Kim Wimbush, and Michelle Harris (Willard); 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., with Pastor Benjamin Redd officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow immediately at Carver Memorial Gardens.

Bassett Funeral Service is honored to serve the Wimbush family.
