Obituaries

Mary Ruth Carter Hairston, 83, of Martinsville, Virginia, transitioned to her heavenly home Saturday, December 27, 2025. She was born June 27, 1942, in North Carolina to the late Harvey Carter and Mary Magalene Covington Moore.

Mary was of the Christian faith and was a faithful member at Integrity Life Ministries where she loved to fellowship with others at church. She loved to visit and be visited by others. Her love of work and cooking, she passed on to her children, setting a great example of work ethics and provision for their families. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren, loved looking after them and making lasting memories with them that they will hold dear for the rest of their lives. Her life left a lasting impression on this earth, and she will always be fondly remembered.

In addition to her loving husband, Samuel L. Hairston; left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Tara D. Wimbush, Bessie Kent, Jacquiline Brooks (Larry); sons, Franklin DeShazo, Clinton DeShazo (Tracey), Jay C. DeShazo (Loreal); 23 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sisters, Betty France, Mary Harris, and Marquita Wooding and numerous extended Family and Friends.

A funeral service will be held Monday, January 5, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel in Martinsville, Virginia. Visitation will be held one-half hour prior to funeral service.
