Obituary For Richard Ervin Harrison

Reverend Richard Ervin Harrison, 86, of Martinsville, VA went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 21, 1939, in Morganton, NC to the late Ernest Harrison and Bertha Lingafelt Harrison. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Myrta Beck Harrison; sisters, Maggie Bumgarner, Mary Warlick, Lucille Walker, Edna Oterri, and Sue Harvey; and his brothers, Charles Harrison, Bill Harrison and Manley Harrison.

Richard leaves behind a legacy of spiritual leadership, love, and unwavering faith in God. His calling was to serve the Lord and faithfully pastored at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, First Baptist Connelly Springs, Grace Baptist, and Fieldale Baptist Church. During his ministry he touched countless lives through sermons, counsel, and dedication to helping others. His life is a testament to the words in 2 Timothy 4:7- “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

The outdoors were a place of peace and reflection for Richard. He had a special gift of tending to his garden and found great joy in sharing crops with others. Fishing and hunting were his favorite hobbies, either being on the river or deep in the woods, this brought him happiness and adventure. He shared a love for travel with his wife and always looked forward to their next destination.

As a devoted husband, loving father, and a proud “Papaw,” he always provided comfort to those he loved. Family and friends will remember his generous ways, gentle heart, and fun spirit.

With a heart full of kindness and a spirit that never aged, Richard brought light into every life he touched. His family will forever cherish the laughter, love, and truly unforgettable memories that he provided.

He is survived by the following family members to cherish his legacy: children, Tammy McGee, Rhonda Gregory (Randy), and Barry Harrison; grandchildren, Jessica Cole (D.J.), Ciji Lankford (Terry), Taylor Bayliss (Brent), and Brooke Alverson (Jay); great-grandchildren, Addison Cole, Austin Cole, Zachary Lankford, Mackenzie Lankford, Caleb Lankford, Raelyn Bayliss, Colton Alverson, and Sadie Alverson; Great-Great-Granddaughter, Iris Low; special granddaughter, Olga Kaniukina; and many other extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Norris Funeral Services with Rev. Roger L. Beck and Jim Warlick officiating.
