Obituaries

Shemikka D. Stokes, 48, of Charlotte, North Carolina, transitioned to her heavenly home Wednesday, February 11, 2026. She was born March 13, 1977, in Martinsville, Virginia to George D. Parker, Jr. (Valeria) and the late Pamela Denise Stokes.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, William Mack “Pimp” Stokes and Bertha Byrd Stokes and paternal grandparents, George Parker, Jr. and Marie Drummond Parker.

Shemikka was of the Christian faith and attended New Beginnings Church in Charlotte. She was a sassy lady who loved to dress up, get her make-up on and get her nails done. Shemikka loved to travel and explore, and she deeply loved her grandchild, her family and friends and wanted to spend as much time with them as she could, whenever she could. Her life has left a lasting impression on this earth and everyone she spent time with and she will be forever remembered. Shemikka was a fighter. She fought the fight for 7 long years, and now her battle has been won. She is free and at peace.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Damien Tyquise Hairston; sister, Alexis Stokes-Ingram; brother, Darrell Marion; aunts, Sheila Hagwood (Willie), Rita Lawrence (Tony), Myrna Felecia Street (Don), Sandra Yvette Hairston, Connie Drummond; uncles, William Timothy Stokes, James Eric Stokes (Tammy), Darwin Stokes, Dwight Stokes (Marie), and Glenn Stokes (Alysa); grandchild, Kairo Hairston; GGBN sisters, Jewell Drewery, Tomeka Dandridge, Germaine Mahan, Latoya Martin, Lakeisha Fulton Holland, Lenore Hairston, Dee Barnes, April Millner and many extended family and friends.

A floating visitation will be held Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Refuge Temple Ministries at 205 Clearview Drive, Martinsville, Virginia. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be held Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Roselawn Burial Park.
