After years of financial uncertainty and shifting partnerships, the New College Institute will become the West Piedmont Higher Education Center under legislation signed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

The change follows the passage of House Bill 430 and Senate Bill 299, which expand the board and redefine its role in Virginia’s higher education system.

Officials said the new name reflects its function as a regional hub. The board will grow from 15 to 20 members, adding university, workforce, and K-12 representation, with Patrick & Henry Community College’s president serving ex officio.

Founded in 2006, the institute partners with colleges to offer programs but does not grant degrees.
