Bassett student brings gun to school

On November 20, 2024, at approximately 9:45 AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was notified by officials from Bassett High School that a firearm was on school property.

The security concern involving a handgun was brought to the attention of school officials by a student who self-reported the incident. The School Resource Officer located the firearm outside of the school building.

The student, Charles Edward Mills, 18 years of age, is responsible for bringing the firearm to the school and has been taken into custody by the SRO and charged with the following offense:

Violation of Virginia Code Section 18.2-308.1: Possession of a Firearm on School Property.

Mills was released on a $3,000.00 un-secured bond.

While Bassett High School will continue its regular schedule, no threats were made towards the school or anyone at the school. We understand that incidents of this nature heighten concerns for student safety. Please be assured that the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Henry County Public Schools are committed to taking every safety concern seriously and responding swiftly to ensure the security of students and staff.
