Obituaries

Hilda Mitchell McAlexander, age 86, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Born on May 9, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Harry O. Mitchell and Rachel Shelton Mitchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood E. McAlexander; her daughter, Debra McAlexander Chaney; her brother, Troy Mitchell; and her sisters, Frances McAlexander and Hazel Vaughan.

Hilda dedicated her career to education, serving as a teacher’s aide for 33 years with the Henry County Public School System. She was a charter member of Christian Faith Baptist Church, where her faith was a guiding force in her life. Hilda enjoyed camping, cooking, sewing and time spent with family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah McAlexander Turner (Posey) of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Jonathan Chaney (Nikki) of Mt. Holly, NC, Christopher Turner (Brandie) of Vinton, Amanda Chaney of Martinsville, and Chelsea Turner of Collinsville; three great-grandchildren, Sheridan Chaney, Amara Turner, and Christopher Turner; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and cherished friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Jonathan Chaney, officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Fairystone Church Cemetery.

Hilda’s love, kindness, and dedication to family and community will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
