Obituaries

Miss Leetonya Z. Hagwood, 56, of Stultz Road in Martinsville, Virginia, entered eternal rest on Friday, December 5, 2025. She was born on April 22, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan. Leetonya moved to Bassett, Virginia, as a young child following her mother’s passing in 1975. She was one of ten children and the baby girl of the family.

Leetonya attended Henry County Public Schools, where she was known for her love of basketball. She had a warm and vibrant spirit that touched every person she met. To know her was truly to love her.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nadine Hagwood Butler; her father, Lee Butler; two brothers: Vaughn Hagwood and Anthony A. Hagwood; two sisters, Tina Hagwood and Adrian D. Hagwood; her grandmother, Jessie Mae Hagwood Hall; her grandfather, William Hagwood; and her nephew, Amos Tyrone Hagwood.

Leetonya leaves to cherish her memory three children: LaShonda M. Rumley, Malcolm J. Hagwood (Kimberly), and Jamie Hagwood-Bonilla (Abias); two sisters: Lolitta Jones (Chuck) and Brenda J. Hagwood; three brothers: Charles Hagwood (Carla), Lee Butler (Leslie), and Doral Butler (Michelle); eleven grandchildren; six nieces; three nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends who loved her dearly.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Tonya was known throughout the community for her smile and the joy she brought to every space. Her spirit touched us all.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel at 1:00pm.
