Obituaries

Patsy J Shumate, 86, of Collinsville, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024. Born in Galax, Virginia December 30, 1937, she was the daughter of the late John Jennings and Mary Bonds Jennings Lovelace.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Sam Marshall Shumate Sr., son, Sam Marshall "Bud" Shumate Jr., daughter, Brenda Nicholas, granddaughter, Crystal Shumate, grandson Joey Shumate, brothers, Harvey Jennings and Junior Jennings, and sister, Dot Carico.

Patsy was a lifelong homemaker and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Although a petite lady, she was fierce in her devotion to her children and was their greatest ally and protector. Her home was always spotless and food readily available for anyone that stopped by. She was an avid reader and lover of coffee. Her family was her life.

Surviving are her sons, Roger (Teri) Shumate of Fieldale, Stephen (Suzy) Shumate of Moneta, daughter, Debra (James) Shumate of Montvale, son in law, Ray Nicholas of Troutville, sisters, Judy (Lee) Surber of Martinsville, Shirley (Robert) Montgomery of Galax, 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way.

A graveside service for family only will be held Monday, December 23 at 3 PM at Henry Memorial Park, officiated by the Rev. Sammy Caldwell. The family will gather for the funeral procession at 2 PM at Valley Drive Baptist Church in Fieldale. The family will return to the church after the service for a time of fellowship together and to meet friends.
