Obituaries

Roy Lynwood “R.L.” Young, 84, of Bassett, VA passed away Monday, January 22, 2024 at his home. He was born March 19, 1939 in Franklin County, VA to the late Minyard Lynn Young and Elva McGhee Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Cecile Marie Campbell Young; brothers, Glennis Young and Dewey Young; and special nephew, Martin Fred Young.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Young (Donna); granddaughters, Amber Bowles and Hailey Young; great-grandchildren, Katie (the pretty one), Riley, Emberlee, Kinley, Addie, Courtlynne, Parker, and Colton (Bozo); sister, Becky McGhee (Joe).

Mr. Young was a member of Prillaman Baptist Church. He was a retired truck driver for Advance Auto Parts. He enjoyed racecar driving, playing golf, and listening to bluegrass, but he especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with Pastor Mike Magnani officiating. The visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Norris Funeral Services and other times at R.L.’s home. Burial will be held at Henry Memorial Park in Bassett, VA.
