Obituaries

Russell Palmer Dickerson, 76, and a proud veteran of the United States Army, transitioned from this earthly life on May 26, 2025, at Sovah Hospital in Martinsville, Virginia. He was born July 6, 1948, to the late Ras Dickerson and Lossie Mae Ballinger Dickerson in Montgomery County, Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Phyllis Gail Strader and Brenda Sue Weiss.

Russell served his country in combat in the Vietnam War and was a member of AMVETS for nearly 30 years as a trustee and other positions in this organization which turned into a good family for him. After leaving the service, Russell worked for years in maintenance. One of the things he enjoyed in his leisure time was watching sports, especially NASCAR and the Miami Dolphins football team. He particularly enjoyed finding a good deal and his kind heart led him to help both his family and his community. He loved working at the Community Storehouse in Martinsville, Virginia. Although Russell is no longer with us on this earth, his legacy of generosity and kindness will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Tammy Michelle Dickerson, Crystal Lynn Harris; sisters, Wanda Louise Haskins (Bobby), Patricia Ann Thacker (Rodney), Nellie “Termite” Graham (Bud), Lilly Gay Martens (Moose); granddaughter, Emily “Abby” McGhee; special friend, Slim; special aunt Sylvia Keith; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

A funeral will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025 @ 1:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Daniel Hester officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. The family requests that memorials be made to AMVETS of Martinsville & Henry County, 2147 Virginia Avenue, Collinsville, Virginia, 24078, in memory of Russell Dickerson.
